About this position
PhD in Light-Driven Synthesis and Recycling of Bio-Based Polymers at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), The Netherlands.
This PhD project focuses on sustainable polymer chemistry at the interface of photochemistry, polymer science, materials chemistry, and circularity. You will develop light-driven methods for the synthesis of polymers from renewable feedstocks and design photocatalytic strategies for chemical recycling back to valuable building blocks. A further part of the project explores how these bio-based polymers can be used in durable and mechanically robust composite materials, connecting molecular-level design with application-oriented materials performance.
The project is hosted in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and the Polymer Performance Materials research group, with links to the interdisciplinary Institute for Complex Molecular Systems. You will work under the supervision of Prof. Fabian Eisenreich and be part of an international collaboration supported by the EuroTech programme. The position includes a six-month research stay at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), offering an additional international research environment and collaboration opportunities.
The position is a full-time PhD appointment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Funding follows the Dutch Universities collective agreement, scale P, with a gross monthly base salary of €3,204 to €4,051, plus an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. TU/e also provides standard employee benefits and support, including training opportunities, pension, leave options, and international staff services.
Eligibility is aimed at highly motivated candidates with BSc and MSc degrees in Chemistry and a strong background in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and/or catalysis. Experience with synthesis and characterization of organic molecules is essential. Strong analytical skills, creativity, initiative, problem-solving ability, and excellent English communication are expected. The selection process includes interviews, a scientific presentation, and a short writing assignment.
The application deadline is 2026-10-10. Candidates must apply online and submit a complete application package including a cover letter, CV with publications and three references, and transcripts of BSc and MSc studies. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
