About this position

KU Leuven in Belgium is advertising a PhD position in a research project on LINE-1 transposition, host factors, and their role in human disease. The group is internationally known for work on HIV host factors, including LEDGF/p75 and Transportin-SR2, and has extended this expertise to LINE-1, a human retrotransposon implicated in neuroinflammatory diseases.

The project investigates how host factors facilitate LINE-1 transposition and aims to identify inhibitors of LINE-1 transposition in cell culture and animal models. The work also involves human neuronal cultures derived from iPSCs and mouse models, making it a strong fit for candidates interested in molecular and cellular mechanisms in biomedical research.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in biomedical, pharmaceutical, or biochemical sciences, or a Master of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, or Bioengineering. The candidate must be eligible for FWO criteria (TOP 20 student) and must have a Master’s degree from a European university. Prior experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, computer science, or histology is considered an asset; experience with lab animals is a bonus.

Funding: the position includes a PhD project, supervision, and bench fees. The group can fund the first year, but the successful candidate is expected to apply for and defend an FWO fellowship in 2027.

Deadline: 24 December 2026, 23:59 UTC. The position is based in Leuven, Belgium at KU Leuven.
