About this position

PhD opportunity: Centre for Doctoral Training in Machine Learning Systems at the University of Edinburgh.

This cohort-based CDT focuses on the symbiosis between machine learning and computer systems, with research spanning the full ML-systems stack. Students will build expertise in computer systems, machine learning, hardware, sensors and control, programming, integrated machine learning environments, AI ethics, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

The programme highlights real-world deployment and optimization of ML methods across applications such as in-car systems, medical devices, phones, sensor networks, condition monitoring systems, high-performance computing, and high-frequency trading. Company engagement and built-in internships are part of the CDT experience.

Funding: at least 10 fully funded studentships are available for September 2027 entry. Funding includes stipend, fees, and research costs for 4 years. Home students may receive an enhanced stipend via the Government TechFirst Scheme.

Eligibility: applicants should have a strong degree or higher qualification in a relevant field (for example computer science, mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, economics, or another area with sufficient computing and mathematical background). Strong programming and machine learning experience is preferred, ideally including deep learning tools such as PyTorch, or a computer systems background. Applications are open to UK/EU/non-EU citizens who meet PhD entry requirements, though international-fees places are limited.

Deadline: first-stage applications close on 14 December 2026 at 23:59. Home applicants may be considered until 15 March 2027 if studentships remain available.
