About this position

PhD opportunity in Machine Learning Systems at the University of Edinburgh, hosted by the School of Informatics and the CDT in Machine Learning Systems.

This cohort-based doctoral programme focuses on the symbiosis between computer systems and machine learning, with training across the systems-ML stack. Research and training areas include computer systems, machine learning, hardware, sensors and control, programming, integrated machine learning environments, AI ethics, and leadership and entrepreneurship.

The CDT emphasizes real-world deployment and optimization of ML methods, company engagement, internships, and entrepreneurship training. Students will be based in Edinburgh, Scotland, in the Informatics Forum.

Funding is strong: the CDT has at least 10 fully funded studentships for September 2026 entry. Studentships cover stipend, fees, and research costs for 4 years. Home students may receive an enhanced stipend through the Government TechFirst Scheme, subject to additional participation requirements. International-fees places are limited.

Typical applicants should have a strong degree or higher qualification in a relevant field such as computer science, mathematics, engineering, physical sciences, economics, or another area with sufficient computing and mathematical background. Applicants should also have solid programming and machine learning experience, ideally including deep learning tools such as PyTorch or a computer systems background.

Deadline for first-stage applications: 14 December 2026, 23:59. Home applicants may be considered until 15 March 2027 if places remain. Apply via the CDT website and contact [email protected] for enquiries.
