About this position

Aalborg University (AAU Energy) is advertising a PhD position in Modelling and Experiments on PEM Electrolysis within the research group Hydrogen and Electro Fuels at the Aalborg campus.

The project sits at the intersection of chemical engineering, electrochemical reactor engineering, electrochemical modelling, and materials science. The PhD student will test proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis cells, analyse electrochemical performance, and develop mechanistic models describing transport, kinetics, and degradation. The work also includes investigating the use of recycled ionomers and iridium, comparing performance and stability with conventional materials, and carrying out techno-economic and life cycle assessment studies.

The position is connected to the CYCLOPEM, ROAD2X, and CAPEX projects, giving access to advanced experimental facilities and collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The successful candidate will participate in project meetings, present at international conferences and workshops, contribute to teaching in chemical/electrochemical reactors, and join the daily activities of the research group.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree and have a background in thermal, chemical, or electrochemical engineering. The PhD is a 3-year stipend position and requires enrolment in the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science, completion of 30 ECTS of PhD courses, teaching/knowledge dissemination, and an external research stay outside Aalborg University (preferably 3–6 months abroad).

Funding: the stipend includes salary and pension benefits. The base salary starts at 31,242.75 DKK before taxes plus 18.07% pension contribution, with final salary negotiable depending on qualifications and experience.

Deadline: 26 May 2026. The application must be submitted through Aalborg University’s recruitment system.
