About this position

A fully funded PhD opportunity is available at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), Sligo, Ireland, in collaboration with Trinity College Dublin, as part of the EPA-funded AIMINGPEAT research project. The project focuses on advanced integrated measurements and modelling approaches for predicting carbon emissions and removals from Irish peatlands, with a strong emphasis on CO2 and CH4 fluxes. The research aims to improve national greenhouse gas inventory reporting and support climate neutrality goals through restoration and management of peatlands. Candidates will work under the supervision of Dr. Alina Premrov (ATU) and Dr. Matthew Saunders (Trinity College Dublin), engaging in interdisciplinary research that combines environmental science, biogeochemistry, and data modelling. Applicants should have a strong background in environmental sciences or related fields, with skills in data analysis, statistical and process-based modelling, and programming (R required, Python desirable). Experience with large datasets, GIS, and remote sensing is advantageous. The project offers a dynamic research environment, opportunities for collaboration, and knowledge transfer. Funding is provided by the EPA Research Programme, covering stipend and research costs. The expected start date is late 2025 or early 2026, with earlier start preferred. Fluency in English is required, and non-native speakers must meet ATU’s language requirements. Interested candidates should apply early and follow the instructions on the provided job link.
