About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in the School of Biology on FoxP2, vocal learning, speech and language evolution, transgenic bats, molecular genetics, neuroscience, bioinformatics.
This EASTBIO/BBSRC-funded 4-year PhD project investigates how humans evolved speech and language by studying vocal learning in bats, a rare mammalian model for complex communication. The project focuses on the molecular and neural mechanisms of vocal learning, including the role of FoxP2, a gene implicated in human speech and Childhood Apraxia of Speech.
You will work with cellular and animal models and use techniques such as tissue culture, cellular assays, gene manipulation constructs for in vivo delivery (ectopic expression, shRNA, CRISPR), immunohistochemistry, fluorescence imaging, RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, single-cell/single-nuclei RNA-seq, and bioinformatics analysis of cross-species datasets. The project also includes collaboration with behavioural specialists and comparison with human clinical data.
Ideal applicants should have a background in molecular biology or genetics, strong curiosity about a novel animal model, and a willingness to work with bats as living animals. Interdisciplinary training, personal development, conference participation, and public outreach are part of the programme.
Funding: stipend at UKRI standard rate plus UK tuition fees; the university covers the Home-International fee difference. Open to UK and international students.
Application: apply via the EASTBIO and University of St Andrews online application process, including the EASTBIO form, EDI survey, academic qualifications, English language qualification if applicable, and two references. Queries about the project go to the supervisor; application queries go to Rachel Horn at [email protected].
Deadline: Monday, 16 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants should have relevant skills in molecular biology or genetics and a genuine curiosity about applying them to a novel animal model. Willingness to work with and study bats as living animals is essential. The project involves tissue culture, cellular assays, gene manipulation constructs, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence imaging, advanced genomics, RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, single-cell/single-nuclei RNA-seq, and bioinformatics pipelines; interdisciplinary collaboration and interest in behavioural and clinical data are advantageous. English language qualification is required if applicable.
How to apply
Download and complete the EASTBIO Equality, Diversity and Inclusion survey and EASTBIO Application Form. Submit an online application through the University of St Andrews portal, select the course 'PhD with internship', and include the required documents and two references. Direct application queries to Rachel Horn at [email protected].
