About this position

PhD project: Multiscale Graph Neural Networks with Micromechanics for Concrete Prediction

The University of Southampton is offering a competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The research combines civil engineering, materials science, computational mechanics and artificial intelligence to predict concrete mechanical properties across multiple structural scales.

Concrete strength depends on interactions among cement paste, fine and coarse aggregates, and the interfaces between them. This project will develop and extend a hierarchical graph neural network linking paste, mortar and concrete models. Micromechanics and homogenisation theory will be integrated to estimate overall stiffness, investigate stress transfer and model interface damage during loading.

The PhD researcher will combine material data, experimental observations and numerical simulations to develop and validate the model. Results will be compared with conventional machine-learning and mechanics-based approaches, with emphasis on both predictive accuracy and physical consistency.

Training will include Python, machine learning, computational mechanics, micromechanical modelling, numerical simulation, multiscale material-property transfer, scientific writing and reproducible software development. The project is well suited to applicants interested in concrete materials, AI-assisted engineering design, materials modelling or engineering software.

Applicants require a 2:1 honours degree. The project closing date is 31 August 2027. Funding is described as competition funded; detailed information about stipend and fee coverage should be confirmed through the university's fees and funding information.

Funding details

The project is competition funded. The post does not specify the stipend amount, tuition-fee coverage, or other financial details. Applicants should consult the University of Southampton fees and funding information for the competition-funded studentship.

What's required

Applicants require a 2:1 honours degree. The project involves machine learning, Python, computational mechanics, micromechanical models, numerical simulation, experimental and simulated data, and concrete materials; relevant prior knowledge or experience in these areas would be advantageous, although no additional specific requirements are stated.

How to apply

Review the full project and entry requirements on the University of Southampton website, then use the university's postgraduate research application process for this project before 31 August 2027. Consult the fees and funding information for details of the competition-funded opportunity.
