About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Bristol in optically controlled radio-frequency integrated circuits.
This project focuses on a new type of RF integrated circuit technology based on optically induced plasmas in silicon, using photo-conductive switches driven by low-cost lasers. The research aims to develop best-in-class switches, attenuators, and phase shifters with very broadband performance, high power handling, and excellent linearity.
The work builds on more than 10 years of research at Bristol and will move the technology toward more scalable packaging. The project includes electromagnetic modelling, cleanroom fabrication, and on-wafer probe testing, making it a strong fit for students interested in RF engineering, millimetre-wave systems, photonics, and semiconductor device research.
You will work in the group of Professor Martin Cryan and join the Photonics and Quantum Research group, which includes around 50 academics, post-doctoral researchers, and PhD students, with access to world-class design, fabrication, and testing facilities.
Eligibility: the post explicitly states that it is for UK students only.
Location: Bristol, England, United Kingdom.
Deadline: 23 December 2026.
Interested candidates should apply through the linked jobs.ac.uk application page.
