About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in Particle-Fluid Interactions in Environmental Flows.
This project sits in the Environmental Fluid Mechanics research group and focuses on how fluids and particles interact in major environmental processes such as ocean plastic pollution, air pollution, sediment transport, and coastal erosion. The work may use experimental, theoretical, numerical, or combined approaches depending on the student’s background and interests.
You will have access to upgraded hydraulics facilities, the University of Southampton supercomputer Iridis, and a wider research community in fluid dynamics. Training may include Particle Image Velocimetry, Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Tracking Velocimetry, and/or High Performance Computing for CFD-based work.
Eligibility: applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, physics, maths, or a related discipline. A strong background in general fluid mechanics is required.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. Funding options mentioned include Horizon Europe fee waivers, University Presidential Bursaries, and school studentships that may cover UK tuition fees plus a stipend for living costs. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
How to apply: submit an online application for the Research programme (2027/28), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Prepare your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.
Supervisor: Dr Sergio Maldonado-Villanueva (project leader), University of Southampton, UK.
