About this position

UNIL (University of Lausanne) is recruiting a PhD student / Graduate Assistant in Plant Genetics in the research group of Prof. Sebastian Soyk at the Department for Molecular Plant Biology (DBMV).

The project focuses on the evolution and function of gene regulatory sequences in the context of crop domestication, using tomato and related species as model systems. The successful candidate will work on gene expression regulation, genome structure and function, development, and crop evolution, with hands-on research in genomics, genome editing, RNA imaging, molecular biology, microscopy, and related wet/dry lab approaches.

The position is based in Lausanne-Dorigny at a vibrant, well-funded institute with access to core facilities for genomics, proteomics, imaging, and bioinformatics. The broader environment includes UNIL, EPFL, and a strong biotech ecosystem in the Lake Geneva region.

Eligibility highlights: MSc degree or equivalent in biology or a related field, strong background in genetics and molecular biology, interest in plant science, and fluent English. Experience with confocal microscopy and genome editing is a plus. The candidate should be motivated, organized, independent, and collaborative.

Funding and terms: The post is described as fully funded, with a 1-year contract renewable up to 5 years and a 90% activity rate. The PhD student will be enrolled in the doctoral school of the Faculty of Biology and Medicine.

Application: Deadline is 2026-06-01. Apply via the website only with a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV, Master’s certificate (or equivalent), and contact details for 2–3 referees.
