PhD opportunity: Portable Microfluidic Cell-Function Diagnostics for Measuring Health Status
The University of Southampton is offering a competition-funded Doctor of Philosophy project in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The research will develop compact, point-of-care technologies for measuring neutrophil function from small blood samples, with the longer-term goal of providing early warning of infection closer to patients and healthcare professionals.
The project combines biomedical engineering, microfluidics, cell biology, medical diagnostics, imaging and quantitative analysis. Planned work includes developing microfluidic methods to handle and stimulate blood cells, establishing quantitative assays of neutrophil responses, creating simpler and potentially self-propelled fluidics, replacing conventional microscope and CCD-camera systems with compact CMOS imaging, and developing feature-extraction approaches for quantitative cellular-response measurements.
The successful candidate will also assess the technical and analytical performance of the compact platform against existing laboratory prototypes and investigate applications in infection-related and resource-constrained defence settings, including field medicine for deployed personnel. The balance between biological assay development and engineering optimisation will be adapted to the candidate's expertise.
Applicants should have at least a 2:1 honours degree. The closing date is 18 December 2026. The project is listed as competition funded, but the post does not specify the stipend or exact tuition-fee arrangements. Prospective applicants should review the full entry requirements, funding information and application instructions on the University of Southampton project page.
