About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Dundee in post-transcriptional control of the segmentation clock and somitogenesis.

This project sits at the intersection of developmental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics. The research investigates how RNA-binding proteins and microRNAs regulate clock gene expression during early embryogenesis, with a focus on the segmentation clock, somite formation, and disease relevance such as congenital scoliosis and T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL).

Students will work with human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC), including maintenance, CRISPR modification, differentiation into presomitic mesoderm (PSM) cells, and generation of 3D somitoids. Techniques may include immunofluorescence, in situ hybridisation, microscopy, RT-qPCR, next-generation sequencing (RNA-seq, RIP-seq, miRNA-seq, RIBO-seq, TAIL-seq, scSeq), immunoprecipitation, western blotting, mass spectrometry, and analysis of large datasets.

Funding: This is a 4-year funded PhD under the EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Landscape Award. It includes a mandatory training programme and a 3-month placement. Funding covers a stipend at the UKRI standard rate and UK tuition fees, with the University of Dundee covering the Home-International fee difference.

Eligibility: Open to UK and international students.

How to apply: Apply via the University of Dundee programme page for the BBSRC EASTBIO Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) Studentship. Check the programme page for full application instructions and requirements.

Deadline: 16 November 2026.

What's required

Applicants should be talented individuals with the ability and potential to benefit from postgraduate research. The project involves work with hiPSC maintenance and differentiation, CRISPR modification, microscopy, sequencing, and large data analysis, so relevant interest or experience in molecular/cell/developmental biology, bioinformatics, or related laboratory techniques would be advantageous. Open to UK and international students.
