About this position

Wageningen University & Research is advertising a PhD in Printing of Complex Fluids within the chair group Physical Chemistry and Soft Matter and the Physics of Soft Matter team. The project focuses on the physics and physical chemistry of complex fluids, soft matter, fluid dynamics, and inkjet printing, with an emphasis on multicomponent inks, droplet formation, satellite droplets, cavitation, and high-speed jetting behavior.

The PhD research will investigate how multicomponent fluids behave just after droplet creation during piezoactuated inkjet printing. The work combines experimental tool development, model ink systems, high-speed microscopy/imaging, and collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The post is co-supervised primarily by Uddalok Sen and supported by Thomas Kodger, within the group led by Jasper van der Gucht.

Applicants should have a completed MSc in physics, physical chemistry, fluid dynamics, or soft matter. The post also asks for independence, interest in building new instrumentation, experience with soft materials and computational tools, and experience with microscopy, especially high-speed imaging. English proficiency at C1 level is expected, and an internationally recognised English certificate may sometimes be required.

The position is fully funded. The salary is listed as €3,059 per month in year 1, increasing to €3,881 per month in year 4, with a temporary 18-month contract that can be extended for the project duration if performance is good. WUR also highlights benefits such as a tailored course program, pension, year-end bonus, and campus facilities.

To apply, candidates must use the university vacancy page and submit a CV and motivation letter, with a maximum total length of 3 pages. Additional files such as grades and transcripts are not required at this stage. The deadline is 16 May 2026.
