About this position

PhD opportunity at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), Grenoble, France. This project focuses on probing conformational membrane protein dynamics by time-resolved X-ray solution scattering (TR-XSS), a cutting-edge approach for watching biomolecular structural changes unfold in real time.

You will join the ID09 team at the ESRF, a leading international research infrastructure for ultrafast X-ray science. The project investigates two high-impact membrane proteins: the zinc-transporting ATPase SsZntA and the dopamine D2 receptor. By using laser-triggered caged compounds, you will initiate ATP- and ligand-driven reactions and record structural changes over timescales from milliseconds to seconds. The goal is to understand how these proteins move and function at the molecular level and to gain insight into mechanisms central to membrane protein activity.

A second important part of the PhD is methodological: you will help develop and apply improved TR-XSS workflows that extend the accessible time range and reduce sample consumption. This will support future time-resolved structural studies on slow, complex, or hard-to-produce membrane proteins.

The project offers an interdisciplinary environment combining synchrotron experiments, advanced structural methods, biophysics, and molecular biology/physics/chemistry skills. It is well suited to a motivated candidate who wants to work at the interface of biology, physics, and cutting-edge instrumentation, with strong prospects for careers in academia, research infrastructure, and the life sciences.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a degree enabling enrolment in a PhD programme, such as an MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent, in chemistry, physics, molecular biology or a closely related field. A background in biophysics is desirable, and English proficiency is required. The appointment also follows the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule, meaning candidates must not have spent more than 12 months in France during the three years prior to the deadline.

Funding and duration: the position is part of the Nextstep Doctoral Programme. The ESRF contract runs for 3 years (2 years + 1 year renewal), followed by a fourth year at Umeå University supported by the university. The notice also mentions a competitive compensation and allowances package, including relocation support to Grenoble.

Application deadline: 19 August 2027.

What's required

A degree allowing enrollment for a PhD (such as MSc, Master 2 de Recherche, Laurea or equivalent) in chemistry, physics, molecular biology or a closely related science is required. A background in biophysics is desirable. Candidates must have proficiency in English, satisfy the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule (must not have resided or carried out their main activity in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years before the application deadline), be doctoral candidates and not already hold a doctoral degree, and must meet the conditions for enrolment in a doctoral programme. Proof of diploma must be provided at application or certified by the university as completed, with the diploma submitted later for doctoral school enrolment.

How to apply

Apply via the online application link provided in the vacancy notice. Shortlisted candidates will later be invited to apply for the relevant Umeå PhD programme. Ensure you meet the MSc-equivalent degree, English, and MSCA mobility requirements before applying.
