About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Basel, Switzerland in rationally engineered hydrogels for controlling osteogenesis via mechanoregulation.

This interdisciplinary project, hosted by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute, combines biomedical engineering, materials science, biology, chemistry, and computational modelling. The research aims to design multifunctional culture matrices with tunable viscoelastic properties, study how hydrogel mechanics influence human dental pulp stem cell differentiation, and build a model to predict cell responses.

The project is especially relevant for students interested in bone tissue engineering, biomaterials, cell culture, microscopy, qRT-PCR, rheometry, atomic force microscopy, and data analysis using GraphPad, MATLAB, or R. The work also explores environmentally instructive hydrogels with controlled architecture and mechanical properties that mimic the jawbone microenvironment.

Funding: fully paid PhD position with salary according to Swiss National Science Foundation guidelines.

Eligibility: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Nanosciences, Biomedical Engineering, Health Sciences and Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field accepted by the University of Basel. Strong English communication skills, a hands-on attitude, and self-driven working style are emphasized.

Application: register your interest via the FindAPhD listing. The university will contact applicants directly. Questions about the project can be directed to Géraldine Guex, and questions about the SNI PhD School to [email protected].

Deadline: 2026-12-31.

What's required

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Nanosciences, Biomedical Engineering, Health Sciences and Technology, Biology, Chemistry, or a similar field from an institute accepted by the University of Basel. The ideal candidate is highly self-driven, hands-on, and interested in an interdisciplinary project spanning biology, tissue engineering, materials science, and chemistry. Experience with mammalian cell culture and analysis (microscopy, qRT-PCR), hydrogel formulation and characterisation (rheometry, atomic force microscopy), and data analysis/graphical representation (GraphPad, MATLAB, R or similar) is preferred. Fluency in English and good communication skills are required.

How to apply

Register your interest through the FindAPhD page. The university will respond directly to your enquiry. If you have project questions, contact Géraldine Guex; for SNI PhD School questions, contact [email protected].
