About this position
Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD position in Bacteria & Materials Interactions at its Biointerfaces Laboratory in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The project sits at the intersection of biomaterials, microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, bacteriophage therapy, and tissue regeneration. The successful candidate will help develop injectable, self-healing hydrogel systems for local delivery of probiotics and bacteriophages to wound sites, with the goal of treating infections caused by AMR bacteria and biofilms while supporting healing.
Research tasks include design and synthesis of injectable hydrogels, encapsulation and controlled delivery of probiotics and phages, engineering antimicrobial strategies against pathogenic bacteria and biofilms, characterization and optimization of hydrogel properties and biological functionality, evaluation of tissue regeneration and therapeutic potential, and investigation of antimicrobial resistance evolution.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Biomaterials, Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or a related field. The post seeks someone with a strong interest in antimicrobial resistance, biomaterials, microbiology, or phage therapy, plus experience in microbiology/bacterial culture, biofilm research, biomaterials and hydrogels, molecular biology or synthetic biology, or bacteriophages. Strong English communication skills and the ability to work independently in an interdisciplinary team are required; prior experience with phages, hydrogels, wound healing models, or antimicrobial testing is a plus.
The position offers a highly international and multidisciplinary environment, access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, scientific training across microbiology, biomaterials engineering, phage biology, and translational biomedical research, and collaboration with bacteriophage experts at ETH Zurich. The appointment is available from November 2026 or by negotiation and lasts four years.
Applications must be submitted online via the Empa job portal and should include a motivation letter, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. Email and postal applications will not be considered.
