About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in Reducing Uncertainty in Aerosol-Driven Monsoon Variability and Climate Risk.

This project sits in the School of Earth & Environment and focuses on climate science, earth science, environmental science, atmospheric science, regional climate modelling, aerosol physics, monsoon variability, data analysis, statistics, scientific computing, machine learning, and mathematical modelling.

Asian monsoons are vital for water resources, agriculture, hydropower, and climate resilience across South and East Asia, but their response to aerosols and pollution remains highly uncertain. The project will use the UK Met Office regional climate model and large ensemble simulations to test how aerosol processes influence monsoon behaviour, explain why models disagree, and identify which physical mechanisms matter most.

You will investigate how variations in aerosol physics affect rainfall, circulation, and climate-risk projections, and explore how observations can help distinguish between competing explanations. The work aims to improve confidence in regional climate projections and provide new methods for understanding uncertainty in climate models.

Training includes interdisciplinary experience in atmospheric science, regional climate modelling, scientific computing, statistics, and data analysis, with opportunities to collaborate on climate prediction, atmospheric composition, and climate-risk assessment.

The project is part of the UNRISK CDT and is fully funded for UK and international applicants (subject to UKRI limits on international awards). Funding includes full tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a Flexible Fund. International applicants must cover visa and health surcharge costs.

Supervisors listed are Dr Leighton Regayre and Professor Ken Carslaw FRS.

Applications are open to UK and international applicants. Check the project page and the UNRISK website for the application route and eligibility details.
