About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in reliable detection of cognitive and affective states from biomedical signals, with a strong focus on EEG, biomedical signal processing, time-series analysis, statistical modelling, and machine learning.

The project investigates how temporal structure in biomedical recordings can bias analyses and inflate performance estimates, and it aims to develop more robust and reproducible methods for analysing biomedical data. You will work with real-world datasets to study temporal leakage, autocorrelation, and dependencies in EEG and related biomedical signals, then compare mitigation strategies across experimental design, signal processing, and machine learning workflows.

This PhD sits at the intersection of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Neuroscience, Psychology, and Cognitive Science. The project also connects to human-centred technologies and may involve collaborations across academia and industry.

Supervisors: Dr Christoph Tremmel, Dr Nathan Huneke, and Professor Stefan Bleeck.

Eligibility highlights: UK 2:1 or equivalent in a relevant subject; programming and quantitative analysis experience; interest in biomedical signals and research methods; desirable experience with EEG, physiological signal analysis, machine learning, or human-participant research. International applicants must meet the university English requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component).

Funding: competition-funded. The post mentions Horizon Europe fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, and school studentships that may cover UK-level tuition plus a stipend. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis.

Application: apply online via the University of Southampton route for Research 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and search for PhD Computer Science (7089). Add the supervisor name in the application and include the required documents.

What's required

Applicants need a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in computer science, engineering, data science, biomedical engineering, psychology, cognitive science, or a closely related subject. Essential experience includes programming (Python, MATLAB, R, or similar), statistical or quantitative data analysis, interest in biomedical signals, time-series data, and research methods, plus either signal processing and machine learning or experimental design and quantitative analysis of behavioural/physiological data. Desirable experience includes EEG or physiological signal analysis, machine learning, human-participant research, and evidence of independent research such as a dissertation, research project, publication, or industrial R&D experience. Non-native English speakers must meet the university requirement of IELTS 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component.

How to apply

Apply online for the Research programme for 2027/28 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Select full-time or part-time, search for PhD Computer Science (7089), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Include a research proposal, CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if applicable.
