About this position

PhD opportunity at Ulster University in Trustworthy Human-Centred AI for Health and Society, hosted by the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment and the Human Centred Computing (HCC) research team.

This project sits at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Health Informatics, Human Computer Interaction, Neuroscience, and related areas. The theme focuses on building AI systems that are not only technically effective, but also trustworthy, explainable, secure, equitable, robust, inclusive, and responsive to human needs.

Students can explore one of several research directions:

• Human Digital Twin for AI-Driven Adaptive Neurorehabilitation — wearable and vision-based sensing, multimodal AI, digital twin modelling, adaptive exergaming, and personalised rehabilitation.

• Trustworthy and Human-Centred AI for Lead Exposure Screening in Children — explainable and equitable AI for childhood lead-risk screening using health, environmental, behavioural, demographic, and socioeconomic data.

• Behavioural Governance, Sandboxing, Runtime Monitoring and Least-Privilege Identity for Non-Human Identities — security and governance for autonomous AI agents, service accounts, and connected digital systems.

The post highlights opportunities to work on explainable and responsible AI, multimodal sensing, digital twins, adaptive intelligent systems, human-AI interaction, and cybersecurity with real-world impact in health, wellbeing, safety, and society.

Eligibility is broad: applicants with backgrounds in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The advert states that applications are welcomed from candidates worldwide.

This is a competition funded PhD project. The post does not specify stipend amount, tuition coverage, or other financial details.

Location: Belfast, United Kingdom.

Deadline: 2027-01-08.
