About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD on resilience against disaster and war in the Netherlands. The project sits in the chair group Sociology of Development and Change and focuses on how resilience initiatives are implemented, who participates, who makes decisions, and what impact they have on communities and crisis preparedness.
The research combines a literature review with empirical work in Dutch municipalities and/or Safety Regions. It is explicitly connected to disaster sociology, community resilience, disaster vulnerability, and emergent organizing. The successful candidate will contribute scientific insights and help formulate recommendations for administrators and policymakers dealing with resilience.
Supervision is by Prof. Bram Büscher, with co-supervision by Dr. Jori Kalkman and Dr. Esther van ‘t Veen. The position is based at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands.
Eligibility highlights include a completed Master’s degree in the social sciences (for example sociology, anthropology, public administration, or business administration), strong research and writing skills, demonstrable interest in crises/disasters/war, and experience with qualitative comparative field research. Applicants must be fluent in Dutch and have English at C1 level; an internationally recognised English certificate may sometimes be required. A certificate of conduct (VOG) is also required.
