About this position

PhD opportunity at Inria Centre at Rennes University in RobDNA: Robust data retrieval for DNA-based data storage.

This project sits at the intersection of computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, and biology, with a strong focus on DNA-based data storage, compression, error-correction, source coding, information theory, and nanopore sequencing. The goal is to develop algorithms for robust retrieval of digital data stored in DNA, especially under insertion/deletion/substitution errors introduced by sequencing.

The project specifically targets joint compression and error-correction methods for quaternary DNA alphabets (A, C, G, T), building on non-binary channel coding and DNA transcoding techniques. The work is motivated by practical challenges in scalable storage, long-term retention, and low-energy data preservation.

Eligibility / profile: graduate degree or equivalent; strong background in image/signal processing, optimization, and programming; knowledge of source coding and information theory is a plus.

Funding: fixed-term PhD contract, 3 years, with remuneration of 2,300€ per month. Additional benefits include subsidized meals, transport reimbursement, leave, teleworking after 6 months, and social security coverage.

Location: Rennes, France.

Deadline: 2026-11-20. Start date: 2026-12-01.

How to apply: submit your application online via the Inria portal with a CV, cover letter, and optionally letters of recommendation. Contact the PhD supervisor Aline Roumy at [email protected] for the listed contact point.
