About this position

PhD opportunity at The Francis Crick Institute in virology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology, focused on signalling and cytoskeletal regulation during Vaccinia virus egress.

The Way lab uses Vaccinia virus as a model system to study how viruses exploit host-cell machinery during replication, assembly, transport, and release. This project investigates unanswered questions in viral egress, including how intracellular mature virions recruit molecular motors, how virions fuse with the plasma membrane, and how host signalling pathways such as Rho/Arf GTPases and lipid signalling regulate exocytosis and actin polymerization. The work combines advanced live-cell imaging, biochemical assays, in vitro motility assays, and potentially structural and cellular approaches.

Applicants should have a background in cell biology, biochemistry, or biophysics. Experience in biochemistry, live-cell imaging, and/or image analysis is especially valued. The project will be refined in consultation with the supervisor based on the candidate’s background and interests.

Funding: fully funded PhD with a non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus university tuition fees. Students of all nationalities are eligible.

Location: London, United Kingdom.

Application: answer the lab-specific question about an important unanswered question in the Way lab and how you would address it, then apply via the project/application route on FindAPhD.
