About this position
PhD opportunity at The Francis Crick Institute in London, United Kingdom: Enabling antibiotics discovery by targeted protein degradation with Dr Francesca Ester Morreale.
This funded PhD project focuses on targeted protein degradation (TPD) in pathogenic bacteria as a new strategy for antibiotic discovery. The project will explore how to design novel antibiotic degraders and study their mechanism of action using biochemistry, biophysics, proteomics, and molecular microbiology. The lab’s broader interest is establishing TPD technology in bacteria, including pathogen-specific approaches inspired by BacPROTACs and bacterial proteolytic systems.
Students will join a multidisciplinary and collaborative research environment and will have the chance to lead their own project while learning new experimental skills. The post is especially suitable for candidates with prior training or strong interest in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical biology, structural biology, or microbiology.
Funding: annual non-taxable stipend of £27,715 plus full university tuition fees. Students of all nationalities are eligible.
Application note: the page includes a lab-specific question asking applicants to describe an inspiring paper they have read and why it stood out. Deadline shown on the page: 2026-11-02.
