About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a four-year, full-time PhD research fellowship in Sociology in Trondheim, Norway. The project examines power, governance, and the political economy of fighting antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with particular attention to pharmaceutical innovation, markets, regulation, procurement, antibiotic sovereignty, and security of supply.
The doctoral researcher will join the interdisciplinary project “Preparedness and Response to AMR, the silent pandemic,” led by Professors Marit Otterlei and Heidrun Åm, and become a member of the Technology and Social Change research group. The research is situated in sociology, political sociology, economic sociology, Science and Technology Studies (STS), critical political economy, and social studies of medicine.
The project uses a qualitative, multi-sited ethnographic design. Planned work includes literature and policy analysis, laboratory ethnography, analysis of Norway’s 2022 evaluation of state antibiotic production, and interviews with policymakers, experts, and health bureaucrats. Applicants should develop a project outline explaining the societal relevance, theoretical contribution, research questions, and research design.
Applicants need a relevant master’s degree, normally with 120 ECTS at master’s level and a thesis of at least 30 ECTS, a B average or better, English proficiency, and eligibility for NTNU’s PhD Programme in Social Sciences. Experience with qualitative or ethnographic research, interpretive policy analysis, Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, and knowledge of Norwegian or European policy are advantageous.
The position provides a gross annual salary normally of NOK 580,000, working-expenses funding, pension and employee benefits. Applications must include a motivation letter, CV, project outline of up to 1,500 words, transcripts and diplomas, thesis or draft, relevant scholarly work, and three referees. The deadline is 20 November 2026.
