About this position
Amsterdam UMC is offering a PhD position in spatial proteomics and neurodegeneration, focused on understanding how cell-type vulnerability and resilience contribute to frontotemporal dementia (FTD).
The PhD researcher will design and perform proteomics studies using human postmortem FTD brain tissue and patient-derived iPSC neuronal cultures. The project will employ innovative single-cell, spatial proteomics, and other omics technologies to investigate molecular and cellular dysfunction, cell-specific vulnerability, and cellular crosstalk in the human brain. Researchers will also contribute to data integration, scientific publications, regulatory-ready data packages, student supervision, and presentations at meetings and conferences.
The project is part of the NWO-funded Adore/KIC-LTP consortium and the broader Adore initiative, bringing together expertise from Amsterdam UMC, the Cancer Center Amsterdam, the Center for Neurogenomics & Cognitive Research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, and the Alzheimer Center Amsterdam UMC. The position is embedded in the single-cell proteomics unit and involves collaboration with Dr. Claudia Ctortecka.
Applicants should hold a master's degree in neuroscience, biomolecular science, or biochemistry, with practical molecular and cellular research experience. Programming and data-analysis skills in Python and R are expected; experience with omics datasets is advantageous. Strong English communication, organization, accuracy, teamwork, creativity, independence, and initiative are also sought.
The appointment is initially for 12 months, with the intention to extend to four years. The salary is €3,217–€4,077 gross per month for full-time employment, depending on experience, plus an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and additional employment benefits. The application deadline is 15 November 2026, although applications are reviewed continuously and the vacancy may close early.
