About this position
PhD opportunity at Ghent University in Specialized Time-Sensitive Wireless Connectivity for Demanding Markets.
The position is hosted in the Department of Information Technology within IDLab and the Intelligent Wireless Networking (iWiNe) team. The research sits at the intersection of wireless networking, time-sensitive networking (TSN), deterministic communication, Wi-Fi, and 6G, with applications in industrial automation, robotics, professional audio/video, autonomous systems, and other cyber-physical infrastructures.
The project builds on openwifi, an open-source full-stack Wi-Fi platform, and aims to develop mechanisms for predictable latency, reliability, synchronization accuracy, and service continuity across the full protocol stack. Depending on your background, the work may involve lower-layer PHY/MAC design on FPGA/SDR platforms or higher-layer networking, scheduling, resource allocation, and protocol design in Linux-based environments.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; strong academic results; excellent English; and relevant technical skills such as digital communications, signal processing, FPGA design, wireless PHY implementation, C/C++, Linux, networking protocols, TSN, real-time systems, or experimental validation.
Funding: full-time doctoral fellowship for 12 months initially, extendable to 48 months after positive evaluation. The fellowship is stated as 100% of the net salary of an AAP member in equal family circumstances and may be tax-free under the applicable rules.
Deadline: 30 November 2026, 23:59. Apply through the official application portal and contact Prof. Jeroen Hoebeke for more information.

What's required
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, or expected before start. Strong interest in wireless communication networks and a willingness to pursue a PhD for 4 years. Excellent study results are required (at least distinction, preferably great distinction). Depending on the research track, candidates should have multiple relevant skills such as digital communications and signal processing, FPGA design (VHDL/Verilog/SystemVerilog), wireless PHY implementation, MAC layer design, SDR/ASIC platforms (e.g. Zynq SoC, RFSoC), fixed-point design, strong C/C++ and Linux programming, Wi-Fi/networking protocols, protocol stack or network algorithm design, TSN, real-time systems, industrial communication, cyber-physical systems, and experimental validation. Strong organization, analytical ability, teamwork, communication skills, and fluent English are required.
How to apply
Apply via the provided jobs.idlab.ugent.be application link before the end of November 2026. Late applications are not accepted. For questions, contact Prof. Jeroen Hoebeke by email.
