About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in astronomy / astrophysics / physics focused on what regulates star formation in distant galaxies.
The project investigates how galactic winds driven by stars and supermassive black holes affect the gas that fuels star formation around 10 billion years ago. You will work with KMOS spectroscopy from ESO’s Very Large Telescope and ALMA observations of cold molecular gas, combining existing datasets with archival data and new observations. The research also includes developing and testing machine-learning methods for automated analysis of large spectroscopic data cubes.
You will gain training in observational astronomy, data reduction, spatially resolved spectroscopy, interferometric data analysis, statistical methods, scientific programming, and research communication. The project is supervised by Dr. Annagrazia Puglisi and Dr. Sandra Raimundo in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, University of Southampton.
Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related discipline. Strong Python or similar programming skills are desirable, along with an interest in galaxy formation and evolution, analytical ability, teamwork, and communication skills. Prior experience with astronomical data analysis, scientific computing, or galaxy evolution is a plus.
Funding: competition-funded PhD with multiple funding routes, including fee waivers and studentships; some awards may cover UK-level tuition plus a living stipend. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
How to apply: submit an online application for the Research programme (2027/28), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for PhD Physics (7089), and add the supervisor name in the application. Include your CV, two references, transcripts/certificates, and English language evidence if needed.
Deadline: 2027-01-06.
