About this position
PhD opportunity in synthetic chemistry with a mining / critical minerals focus at Curtin University, in collaboration with CSIRO Minerals.
The project is titled Design and synthesis of tailored phosphorus and diglycolamide-based extractants with enhanced steric and electronic selectivity for critical minerals. It focuses on designing innovative extractants for rare earth elements (REEs) and other critical minerals, with applications in renewable energy systems, electronics, and the defence sector.
The research involves rational molecular design, synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of phosphorus-based extractants and diglycolamides (DGAs), with attention to extraction efficiency, selectivity, synergistic effects, stripping behaviour, and structure–activity relationships. The selected candidate may also conduct hydrometallurgy-related components at CSIRO facilities.
Eligibility: applicants should have a background in synthetic chemistry, be able to work in a multidisciplinary environment, and be eligible for Curtin University PhD enrolment. This project is open to domestic applicants only.
Funding: the preferred candidate may be considered for a Curtin RTP scholarship. An internship opportunity is also available through Curtin or external providers such as APR Intern and iPREP.
Application window: submit an Expression of Interest to Dr Alan Payne during the Central Scholarship round, 1 July 2026 to 31 July 2026.
Contact: Alan Payne, Senior Lecturer at Curtin University, Perth, Australia.
