About this position
PhD opportunity at The Francis Crick Institute, London, United Kingdom
This funded PhD project with Dr Andreas Wack focuses on tissue immunity, immune memory, and the response of the lung to viral and bacterial infections. The project investigates how infections such as influenza and COVID-19 shape lung immunity, epithelial repair, and the long-term behaviour of immune cells, especially monocyte-derived alveolar macrophages.
The research sits at the intersection of immunology, microbiology, and virology, with strong links to epithelial cell biology, metabolism, repair processes, and immune cell–epithelial interactions. The lab uses organotypic lung in vitro models, in vivo infection models, and advanced methods including scRNA-seq, ATAC-seq, Cut&Run, Scenith, and spatial analysis strategies to study how prior infections leave lasting imprints on the lung and influence responses to later infections.
Applicants should be interested in tissue response to infection and tissue immune memory. Experience with in vitro and/or in vivo work in immunity is preferred. Backgrounds in epithelial or endothelial cell biology, bioinformatics, and epigenetic data generation/analysis are especially welcome. Data mining of in-house and published datasets is an important part of the project.
This is a funded PhD project for students worldwide. The award includes a non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus university tuition fees. The posting does not mention a separate application fee waiver or language-test waiver.
The deadline shown on the posting is Monday, November 02, 2026. Applicants should review the project page carefully and respond to the lab-specific question about which aspect of the research they would most like to explore and what skills or perspective they would bring.
Funding details
Funded PhD project. Successful applicants will receive a non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus payment of university tuition fees. Students of all nationalities are eligible to apply.
What's required
Candidates should be interested in tissue response and tissue immunity to infection, as well as tissue immune memory imprinted by infection. Ideally, applicants should find innate and adaptive immunity and memory equally interesting and have in vitro and/or in vivo experience in this area. Backgrounds in epithelial or endothelial cell biology, bioinformatics, and generation and analysis of epigenetic data would also be appreciated. Data mining of in-house and published data is integral to the project.
How to apply
Review the project details and answer the lab-specific question in your application. Prepare to explain which aspect of the lab's research interests you most and what perspective, skill, or approach you would bring. Submit through the FindAPhD/Crick application route linked from the posting.
