About this position
This PhD position at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the green transition and climate change mitigation through advanced research in fusion energy. The project is based in the Department of Physics, a globally recognized center for excellence in experimental and theoretical physics, and focuses on developing next-generation frameworks for measuring energetic particle distribution functions in fusion plasmas using tomographic inversion techniques.
As a PhD student, you will join an interdisciplinary team of experts in plasma diagnostics, computational plasma physics, and tomography. Your main responsibility will be to encode prior knowledge of collisional processes in tokamak fusion plasmas using sophisticated numerical simulation codes, enabling the analysis of experimental data from fusion devices. The research aims to address key challenges in energetic particle physics, such as instability drive and anomalous transport due to plasma instabilities, by developing novel integrated data analysis diagnostic tools.
The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining plasma physics, mathematical methods, computational modeling, and experimental diagnostics. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with international academic partners and work in a dynamic, inclusive, and innovative environment. DTU is committed to academic excellence, collegial respect, and academic freedom, and offers a rewarding and challenging job in an international setting.
Applicants should have a strong background in plasma physics, tomography, inverse problems, or computational physics, with experience in several of these areas preferred. A two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent in Physics or a related field is required. Good programming skills and proficiency in English (written and spoken) are essential, as is the ability to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams.
The position is fully funded, with salary and appointment terms based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The employment period is three years, and the starting date is as soon as possible by mutual agreement. DTU provides support for international applicants, including relocation seminars and resources for moving to Denmark.
To apply, submit your complete online application by 26 January 2026, including a cover letter, CV, grade transcripts, and BSc/MSc diploma in English as a single PDF file. For further information, contact Professor Mirko Salewski at [email protected]. More details about DTU Physics and the application process can be found via the provided application link.
DTU is dedicated to creating technology for people and solving global challenges, including those outlined in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The Department of Physics contributes to sustainable energy research, including catalysis, Power-to-X, and nuclear fusion, and fosters innovation in quantum technologies, geosciences, and life sciences. Join DTU to be part of a vibrant academic community working towards a better world.
