About this position
This PhD project explores ocean observation through surfing, focusing on the development and field trialling of sensors integrated into surfboards. The research aims to investigate how surfboards can act as mobile platforms for collecting valuable observations from the coastal ocean and surf zone.
The student will work on a practical, interdisciplinary project involving marine sensing, oceanography, environmental observation and open-hardware approaches. The work is supported by collaboration with a UK surfboard manufacturer and an open-hardware company, providing links to the surfing industry, technical development and real-world deployment.
Academic support is provided by the University of Exeter and the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The supervisory team includes Ian Ashton, Bob Brewin, Phil Bresnahan and Troy Frensley. Students will be based at the University of Exeter’s Cornwall campus, living and working in the heart of the UK’s primary surfing zone, with direct access to the surfing community and industry for project trials and engagement.
