About this position

This PhD opportunity at KU Leuven focuses on the development of personalized antimicrobial mouthrinse selection in periodontal therapy, aiming to improve patient outcomes and reduce unnecessary antimicrobial use. The project is embedded within the Periodontology and Oral Microbiology (P&OM) research group, part of the Department of Oral Health Sciences in the Biomedical Sciences group at KU Leuven. The research addresses the challenge of variable responses to non-surgical periodontal therapy and frequent disease recurrence, with a particular emphasis on the limitations of systemic antibiotics and the need for individualized adjunctive antimicrobial strategies.

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and validation of PAM-Select, an innovative clinical decision-support tool that leverages patient-specific microbial profiles to guide mouthrinse selection. Research activities will include modeling patient-driven biofilms, investigating genotypic and phenotypic changes in biofilms following antimicrobial interventions, and assessing the immunogenicity of treated biofilms. The project is highly interdisciplinary, combining experimental wet-lab work, computational analysis, and clinical research.

Collaboration is a key aspect of this position, with opportunities to work alongside Ghent University (Prof. Nico Boon; CMET) and the possibility of obtaining a joint PhD degree in Bioengineering. The candidate will benefit from access to state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure, close supervision, and training in both experimental and computational approaches. Participation in international conferences and training programs is encouraged, fostering professional development and networking within the scientific community.

KU Leuven offers a stimulating and collegial research environment in the vibrant town of Leuven, located near Brussels. The university is renowned for its innovative research culture and commitment to diversity and inclusion. The position provides a 4-year PhD research fellowship, with guidance and support to apply for additional funding from FWO–Vlaanderen.

Eligibility requirements include a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bioengineering, or Biology, proficiency in English, wet-lab experience (bacterial and human cell culture), and preferably knowledge of coding/programming and/or microbial sequencing. Candidates should demonstrate strong critical thinking, independence, problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset.

Applications must be submitted online by February 2, 2026, including a detailed CV, motivation letter, academic transcripts, and contact information for at least two academic referees. For further information, prospective applicants may contact Dr. Naiera Zayed or Prof. Wim Teughels via email. KU Leuven is committed to equal opportunity and a respectful, inclusive academic environment.
