About this position
University of British Columbia (UBC) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Complex In Vitro Modeling and Drug Formulation Testing at the UBC Vancouver Campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This interdisciplinary role sits within the Kalra Lab in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and involves close collaboration with the Applied Research Center at Langara College and industry partners.
The project focuses on pharmaceutical sciences, bioengineering, cell biology, and drug delivery. The successful candidate will develop and validate advanced physiological models such as organoids, spheroids, 3D cell culture systems, and potentially organ-on-a-chip platforms to study the efficacy, toxicity, biodistribution, and cellular uptake of novel therapeutic formulations. Example formulations include lipid nanoparticles and polymeric carriers, with an additional interest in cannabinoid formulations.
Responsibilities include model development, assay design, high-throughput screening, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, data analysis, manuscript preparation, conference presentations, and mentoring of graduate and undergraduate researchers. The position is for a motivated researcher who can contribute to translational work bridging benchtop drug discovery and clinical application.
Eligibility highlights: a completed or nearly completed PhD in Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field; strong mammalian cell culture experience with complex in vitro systems; hands-on experience testing drug formulations or nanomedicines; first-author publication record; and excellent English communication skills. Preferred experience includes advanced imaging, cannabinoid research, and characterization of delivery vectors such as DLS and zeta potential.
Funding and term: full-time appointment, initially for 1 year and renewable depending on funding and performance. The expected salary is CAD 60,000 per year, with benefits and access to UBC postdoctoral professional development resources. The posting notes that Canadians and permanent residents of Canada will be given priority.
Application window: applications are accepted until 2026-11-15. Review begins on 2026-11-16. Applicants should submit a single PDF with a cover letter, CV, and three professional references (including the PhD supervisor).

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD completed within the last 2 years or expected shortly in Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Cell/Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or a closely related field. Required experience includes mammalian cell culture with complex in vitro systems such as 3D cultures, primary cells, co-cultures, or stem cell-derived organoids; hands-on testing of drug formulations or nanomedicines in vitro; and a record of scientific productivity with first-author peer-reviewed publications. Excellent written and oral English communication skills are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with live-cell confocal imaging or multi-photon microscopy, familiarity with cannabinoids and cannabinoid formulations, and background in synthesis or physical characterization of drug delivery vectors such as DLS and zeta potential.
How to apply
Submit a single PDF containing a cover letter, current CV with full publication list, and contact information for three professional references including your PhD supervisor. Applications are reviewed starting November 16, 2026 and accepted until the posting end date.
