About this position
Münster University of Applied Sciences is offering a doctoral position in adaptive optics at its Photonics Laboratory and Laboratory for Optical Technologies and Materials at the Technology Campus Steinfurt, Germany.
The PhD researcher will develop adaptive mirrors and innovative actuators using single-crystal piezo actuators, new substrate materials and advanced manufacturing processes. The project seeks to improve the optical and mechanical performance of adaptive mirrors and explore applications in materials processing, space telescopes and mode matching of squeezed-vacuum light states for next-generation gravitational-wave interferometers.
The position also includes teaching support for laboratory classes in technical optics, wave optics and solid-state laser development. The successful candidate will receive personal supervision from Professors Florian Vogelbacher and Ulrich Wittrock, whose research groups collaborate in state-of-the-art laboratories.
Applicants should hold a master's degree in physics or engineering sciences, preferably specializing in optics or laser engineering, and have experience establishing optical systems. Programming skills in Python or Matlab are required; COMSOL Multiphysics or comparable simulation experience is advantageous. Good English and German communication skills are expected, with willingness to acquire either language accepted. The role is suitable for applicants interested in application-oriented research and teaching.
The doctoral appointment is 70% full-time equivalent for two years, with funding for a further two years guaranteed after a successful interim evaluation. Salary follows TV-L pay scale 13. Applications must be submitted online by 8 November 2026.
