About this position
This PhD project at Leiden University explores a new approach to building biocatalytic nanofactories by packaging biocatalysts inside lipid vesicles during bacterial expression. The work sits at the intersection of synthetic cells, biotechnology, and enzyme engineering, with the aim of creating ready-to-use liposome-encapsulated systems for cascade reactions.
You will work on optimising and applying a technology that confines biocatalysts in vesicles while they are produced in bacteria, a strategy intended to improve yields and generate functional nanoreactors. The project is especially relevant if you are interested in the expression, characterisation, and engineering of biocatalysts, as well as the structure-function relationships that govern enzyme performance.
The position is embedded in the Jeuken lab, led by Prof. Lars Jeuken, within the Macromolecular Biochemistry group at the Leiden Institute of Chemistry. You will join a shared biochemical lab headed by multiple group leaders and a collaborative, transparent, and inclusive research environment. The wider faculty context includes strong links across the Faculty of Science and a research setting at Leiden’s Bio Science Park, with access to advanced lab infrastructure and an international network of research groups.
