About this position

ETH Zürich invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Computer Simulation of Knee Arthroplasty at the Institute for Biomechanics, Department of Health Sciences and Technology. This multidisciplinary research unit is dedicated to investigating the biomechanics and material properties of the human musculoskeletal system, spanning from organ to cellular scales. The position is part of a collaborative project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, involving EPF Lausanne, University of Lausanne, and ETH Zürich, and aims to improve joint arthroplasty performance through novel materials and design, with a focus on the knee.

The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced, patient-specific finite element models of the knee joint for design iteration and optimization. Responsibilities include integrating patient-specific boundary conditions from musculoskeletal simulations, performing parametric design studies to assess the influence of geometry and material properties on implant and peri-implant stresses, and supervising BSc and MSc projects within the research infrastructure. Dissemination of research through peer-reviewed publications and international conferences is expected.

Applicants must have a master's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field, with substantial experience in computational simulation methods such as finite element analysis. Proficiency in English, strong teamwork and communication skills, and the ability to work independently are required. Desirable qualifications include experience with medical image analysis, biomaterials, tissue mechanics, additive manufacturing, German language skills, and prior scientific publications.
