About this position
PhD opportunity in quantum technology at Université Grenoble Alpes, hosted in the Grenoble quantum research ecosystem and associated with Institut Néel. The project focuses on the development of a 3-wave mixing nanowire Josephson parametric amplifier, a topic at the intersection of superconducting quantum devices, nanofabrication, and low-temperature quantum measurements.
The research aims to push forward hybrid superconductor–semiconductor platforms for applications in superconducting qubits, quantum-limited amplification, and topological quantum research. In contrast to conventional tunnel-junction Josephson parametric amplifiers, this PhD will investigate InAs nanowire Josephson junctions and explore the use of superconductors with a large superconducting gap, such as Sn or Ta, to enable magnetic-field-compatible operation. This is particularly relevant for integration with spin-qubit and topological-quantum platforms.
The doctoral candidate will fabricate Josephson junctions using inclined InAs nanowires developed at Institut Néel by Moira Hocevar through molecular beam epitaxy. The work includes superconductor deposition, assessment of film quality, DC transport characterization at low temperature, and iterative optimization toward a functional amplifier. The final device is expected to operate in the GHz range, and measurement campaigns will be carried out in a dilution refrigerator to evaluate gate tunability, noise temperature, resilience to magnetic fields, and the possibility of generating non-classical states of light such as squeezed states.
The position is part of the QuanG2 PhD Call coordinated by Université Grenoble Alpes and funded under Horizon Europe – COFUND. It offers a fully funded three-year PhD in an international research environment with dedicated support for research and training.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent by the deadline, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule for France. There are no nationality or age restrictions, and current employees of the host laboratory are not eligible.
