About this position
Ph.D. opportunity in advanced materials and nuclear engineering at Virginia Tech
Eda Aydogan is recruiting a highly motivated Ph.D. student to join her research group in the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Nuclear Engineering Program at Virginia Tech, beginning in Fall 2027. The research centers on advanced materials under extreme environments, with applications in nuclear and structural materials engineering.
Research topics include radiation effects and microstructural evolution in metals and alloys; ferritic/martensitic steels, oxide dispersion strengthened alloys, and compositionally complex alloys; additive manufacturing and microstructure engineering; and advanced materials characterization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and complementary techniques. The student may conduct experimental research and collaborate with researchers at national laboratories and other institutions.
Applicants should have a degree in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or a closely related field. An M.S. degree is preferred, although highly qualified B.S. graduates are encouraged to apply. Experience in physical metallurgy, electron microscopy, advanced manufacturing, or radiation effects is desirable.
Interested candidates should email a CV, a brief description of their research interests and experience, and academic transcripts to Eda Aydogan at [email protected]. The opportunity is intended to start in Fall 2027. Please use “PhD Position – Fall 2027” as the email subject line.
