About this position

PhD Position in Ambient Backscatter for Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks (6G IoT) at Delft University of Technology

Join the Embedded Systems Group at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics & Computer Science (EEMCS), Delft University of Technology, and contribute to the development of satellite-enabled 6G IoT technologies that operate without batteries. This project focuses on ultra-low-power communication using ambient backscatter, leveraging existing radio signals for near-zero energy operation in both terrestrial and satellite networks.

Research Areas: 6G, IoT, ambient backscatter, non-terrestrial networks, wireless communication, signal processing, energy-efficient communication, satellite communication, embedded systems, RF measurement.

Key Research Tasks:

  • Design energy-efficient modulation and communication schemes.
  • Model wireless backscatter links for terrestrial and satellite networks.
  • Investigate intelligent reflection mechanisms for improved link performance.
  • Develop signal processing techniques for time-varying channels.
  • Explore creative solutions for near-zero energy operations.

Candidate Profile: Applicants should have an MSc in Electrical Engineering, Wireless Communications, Applied Physics, or a related field. Required skills include a strong background in physical layer design, satellite/NTN communication, backscatter communication, or signal processing. Programming experience in MATLAB and/or Python is necessary, and experience with SDR platforms (USRP, GNU Radio) is a plus. Strong analytical, mathematical, and English communication skills are essential.

Supervision and Environment: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Arash Asadi and Prof. Przemysław Pawełczak, collaborating with European partners in the IoT-ZERO Horizon Europe project. The position offers access to advanced SDR platforms, RF measurement labs, and wireless experimentation facilities, as well as enrollment in the TU Delft Graduate School for professional and scientific training.

Funding: This is a fully funded, full-time (40 hours/week) PhD position with a salary of €3,059 – €3,881 per month (Scale P, CAO NU). The contract duration is 4 years (initial 1.5-year contract with a 2.5-year extension upon successful assessment).

Application Process: Submit your CV, motivation letter (max 800 words), and BSc & MSc degrees and transcripts via the TU Delft online portal. The motivation letter should include your research plan, topic of interest, and why you are suitable for the position. For questions, contact Dr. Arash Asadi at [email protected].

Deadline: 25 March 2026
