About this position
This PhD project at the Medical University of Innsbruck investigates the mechanistic origins of chromosomal instability (CIN) in cancer and its role in immune evasion, therapy resistance, and metastatic spread. The research addresses how tumors can suppress interferon signaling and evade immune detection before metastasis.
The doctoral researcher will develop the computational core of a multimodal artificial intelligence system in close collaboration with wet-lab scientists and clinical teams. The model will integrate genomic, transcriptomic, imaging, and histological information to identify and predict CIN-driven metastasis in cancer patients.
Research activities include curating and harmonizing data from WES/WGS, bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, whole-slide histology, and PET/CT imaging. The project will also analyze tumor neural innervation in histological images and connect these findings with PET/CT data. Model predictions will be evaluated against experimental and clinical outcomes through collaboration with an international research network.
The successful researcher will work in an emerging program bridging multimodal AI systems, chromosomal instability, and interferon biology. The environment combines computational, genomic, and imaging infrastructure at the Medical University of Innsbruck with access to wet-lab and clinical expertise, research visits, and joint projects involving European and US collaborators, including City of Hope and UC San Diego.
The project offers opportunities to publish first-author research in leading peer-reviewed journals and present findings at international conferences.
