About this position
This PhD opening is part of the research environment of the Lehrstuhl für Thermodynamik mobiler Energiewandlungssysteme (TME) and the Institut für Thermodynamik at RWTH Aachen University. The group, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger, works within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and is closely connected to the Center for Mobile Propulsion (CMP).
The project focuses on simulation of battery lifetime for lithium-ion cells, with an emphasis on electrochemical and thermal cell models. The successful doctoral researcher will study how aging effects influence lifetime, compare lifetime models with measurements, and validate cell test procedures and measurement parameters. The role also includes improving existing simulation workflows and developing new methods for lifetime prediction and optimization of cell durability, including strategy-based approaches.
The chair’s broader research agenda covers mobile propulsion systems, including internal combustion engines with synthetic fuels, fuel cells, and battery-electric drives, all linked to advanced test methods and calibration. This position sits in that applied mobility research environment, where simulation and experimental work are combined to support sustainable transport solutions.
The work involves collaboration with research partners and internal specialist departments, offering a doctoral research setting at RWTH Aachen University.
