About this position

Lund University, founded in 1666 and consistently ranked among the world’s top universities, offers a PhD position in the Sustainable Energy Systems Division at the Department of Energy Sciences. The division focuses on research and education in efficient and environmentally friendly energy systems, with particular emphasis on grid-connected systems such as electricity, district heating, and gas, as well as the associated markets. The division comprises around 20 staff members, two-thirds of whom are PhD students, and maintains international collaborations across Europe, Asia, and North America.

This PhD position is part of an EU-funded project aimed at scaling up low-temperature solutions for district heating operations. The research will center on identifying and developing effective business models for these innovative energy solutions, drawing on case studies from several European countries. The project leverages LTH’s unique expertise in low-temperature district heating, both technologically and in business modelling, and aims to advance the research frontiers in this field.

As a PhD student, you will be admitted as both a student and an employee at Lund University. Your responsibilities include participating in research projects, undertaking doctoral courses, contributing to teaching (up to 20% of your working hours), and engaging in other departmental duties. The position offers a fixed-term contract for four years, full-time, with a start date to be agreed. Employment is based in Sweden, and you are expected to work on-site at Lund.

Applicants must hold a second-cycle degree in a relevant subject area, with at least 240 higher education credits (including at least 60 at the second-cycle level), or equivalent knowledge. Additional requirements include at least 90 credits relevant to the doctoral programme, with at least 60 at advanced level and an in-depth project worth at least 30 credits at advanced level. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, and familiarity with business models are essential. Merits include credits from industrial and/or financial studies, experience in the district heating field, and experience with energy business models.

Lund University is a government agency, offering special benefits, generous holidays, and a favourable occupational pension. PhD students are employed with a salary set according to the university’s pay scale. Further information about employment and doctoral studies is available on the university’s website.

To apply, submit your application in English via the university’s online portal. Include your CV, list of publications, personal statement, degree certificate or equivalent, and any supporting documents such as transcripts, referees, and recommendation letters. The application deadline is December 31, 2026.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in sustainable energy systems, district heating, and the development of business models for innovative energy solutions. The position provides a unique platform to contribute to cutting-edge research and to collaborate internationally within a supportive academic environment.
