About this position
This postdoctoral project focuses on the techno-economic analysis of resilient urban energy systems for the south-eastern districts of Uppsala. The work addresses a real planning challenge for one of Sweden’s largest urban development projects, with the results intended to support municipal decision-making as the district is built out.
The successful candidate will work on concepts for supplying a new urban district with both heat and electricity in a way that remains robust under disruptions. The project investigates a flexible low-temperature heating system, a flexible electricity microgrid, and the interaction between them as an integrated multi-energy system. A central part of the research is to quantify the socio-economic value of resilience, including security of supply, recovery time, and outage costs.
The position is embedded in a collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, and Uppsala Municipality, within the research area STandUP for Energy. Part of the working time is spent at Uppsala Municipality, giving direct access to planning documentation, stakeholders, and implementation questions. This creates a close link between modelling, scenario development, and practical urban energy planning.
The postdoc will develop scenarios for district build-out, connection rates, energy demand, technology rollout, and system configuration; compare alternative concepts; and translate the results into decision support for the municipality. The work also includes analysing business and implementation models, publishing results in scientific journals, presenting at conferences, and contributing to applications for external research funding.
The environment is highly applied and interdisciplinary, connecting urban development, energy systems modelling, and policy-relevant analysis across research and municipal practice.

What's required
A PhD in energy technology, energy systems, mechanical engineering or an equivalent field, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent, completed no later than the time the employment decision is made. Applicants should have documented experience in modelling, optimization and analysis of energy systems, preferably integrated or multi-energy systems, and experience in techno-economic analysis, investment planning, infrastructure sizing or operational optimization. Knowledge of thermal energy systems such as district heating, heat pumps or thermal storage is required, along with understanding of energy markets and policy instruments for heat and electricity. Programming skills and experience developing or applying computational models for energy system analysis are required. The applicant must be able to communicate in English orally and in writing. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, experience with low-temperature heating systems, waste heat recovery, thermal storage or distributed energy resources, resilience or reliability analysis, energy economics or business models, collaboration with municipalities, authorities or industry, awareness of gender equality and diversity, and knowledge of Swedish or willingness to learn it.
How to apply
Apply through KTH’s recruitment system via the application link. Include a CV, copies of diplomas and grades, translations into English or Swedish if needed, and a brief statement of research interests and motivation of up to two pages.
