About this position

Doctoral (PhD) student position in Chromatin Dynamics and DNA Topology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.

The Baranello Lab is seeking a motivated doctoral student to join a project at the interface of chromatin biology, DNA topology, transcription regulation, and cancer biology. The research asks how topoisomerases are regulated during transcription, how transcription machinery controls topoisomerase activity, and how these mechanisms can be leveraged to identify new anti-cancer strategies. The work combines wet-lab molecular biology, DNA/RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, advanced microscopy, and drug-related functional studies.

The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative environment with connections to researchers at the NIH in the US and Tokyo University in Japan, and will also complete short research stays in Italy at Hospital San Raffaele to learn key techniques. The PhD program includes seminars, courses, conferences, and the opportunity to develop strong skills in experimental design, data analysis, interpretation, and scientific writing.

Eligibility: a master’s degree or equivalent, or the equivalent of 240 credits with at least 60 at advanced level; English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. The group is especially interested in candidates with backgrounds in transcription regulation, topoisomerase biology, DNA topology, mammalian cell culture, protein biochemistry, microscopy, PLA assay, sequencing, and programming in R/Python.

Funding: doctoral studentship with contractual salary for up to 4 years full time.

Application: apply via Varbi before 5 November 2026. Include a motivation letter, CV, proof of eligibility, supporting documents for relevant skills, a summary of prior degree projects/publications, and two references.
