About this position
Aalto University in Espoo, Finland, is seeking a Doctoral Researcher (PhD student) in condensed matter physics and two-dimensional quantum devices in the Atomic Scale Physics group at the Department of Applied Physics.
The project investigates emergent electronic phenomena in gate-tunable van der Waals materials using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Research topics include correlated electron systems, topological systems, superconductivity and quantum phases in 2D materials. The work combines nanofabrication of quantum devices with lithography, deposition, exfoliation and transfer of layered materials, low-temperature STM experiments, collaboration with theoretical physicists, data analysis and scientific publication.
The position is supervised by Dr. Viliam Vaňo under the leadership of Professor Peter Liljeroth. It is a fully funded PhD project with an initial two-year contract, extendable by two further years following a successful midterm review. The starting salary is approximately €3,142 gross per month, with increases during doctoral studies, and occupational healthcare is included.
Applicants need a Master's degree in condensed matter physics or a closely related field, strong interest in experimental physics and good English skills. Experience with 2D-material nanofabrication, cleanroom processing, low-temperature or ultra-high-vacuum systems, STM, and 2D quantum materials is advantageous. The successful applicant must obtain doctoral study rights in the Aalto University School of Science.
Applications close on 30 November 2026. Submit a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, Master's thesis, and recommendation information through Aalto University's recruitment portal.
