About this position
Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, invites applications for a four-year PhD position on Decolonising Reparations: Transforming the Legacies of Colonialism. The project is based in the Department of Political Science, Nijmegen School of Management, and is funded by the NWO.
The PhD researcher will investigate what reparations for colonialism could look like, focusing on the experiences and expectations of Indo and Indonesian communities affected by colonialism. The research will examine colonial legacies in Indonesia and the Indonesian diaspora in the Netherlands through participatory and creative research methods, including co-produced multimedia outputs, interviews with stakeholders and a vignette study with the broader population in Indonesia.
The researcher will work with Dr Sanne Weber, the main substantive supervisor and Assistant Professor, and Dr Haley Swedlund, alongside a postdoctoral researcher studying Belgium and the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa. The work contributes to debates on reparative justice, transitional justice, decolonisation, historical injustice, redress and intersectionality. Duties include developing an article-based PhD project, conducting independent qualitative fieldwork, publishing research, attending academic events, contributing to team strategy and undertaking up to 5% teaching.
Applicants need a relevant Master’s degree, strong qualitative research training, fieldwork experience, a substantive interest in justice and reparations, familiarity with Indonesia, willingness to undertake several months of fieldwork there, excellent academic English, and experience organising and presenting research. Participatory or arts-based methods, local-language skills, Dutch, community experience and basic quantitative methods are desirable.
The position is a paid 1.0 FTE employment contract, initially for 1.5 years and potentially extended to four years. Salary ranges from €3,204 to €4,051 gross per month, with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus and university employment benefits. The application deadline is 8 November 2026; the preferred start date is 1 March 2027. Apply through the Varbi portal.
