About this position

PhD position at the University of Amsterdam in deep-sea benthic ecology in the Arctic Ocean. The project is part of C-CONNECT (“Plumbing the biological pump: Linking missing carbon flows between pelagic and benthic ecosystems in a changing Arctic Ocean”) and focuses on how deep-sea life, benthic faunal communities, and carbon cycling interact under rapid Arctic climate change.

You will work in an international team involving the University of Amsterdam, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, and the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. The research combines long-term time-series data, field expeditions to the Arctic around Svalbard/Spitsbergen, laboratory analyses, and data analysis. The project includes multi-week cruises on research vessels, use of ROVs, incubation experiments, and deep-sea sensors measuring ecological processes down to 6,000 m.

The position is co-supervised by Jasper de Goeij (University of Amsterdam) and Furu Mienis (Royal NIOZ), with Claudio Richter and Autun Purser (AWI) also in the supervisory team. The role is based at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, Department of Freshwater and Marine Ecology.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in ecology, biology, or biogeochemistry, preferably with a water-science background. Experience in fieldwork and lab work, plus strong data analysis, statistics, and scientific writing skills, are expected. Fluency in English and a collaborative attitude are important.

The PhD is a 4-year temporary contract at 38 hours per week. Salary starts at €3,204 gross/month and rises to €4,051 gross/month in the final year, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension, training, leave, Dutch language courses, and housing support for relocation.

Apply online via the vacancy page by 31 October 2026. Submit a CV, motivation letter, publication list, and contact details for two referees. Interviews are planned for November and December, with online interviews expected between 5–9 November.
