About this position
PhD opportunity in the EU MSCA Doctoral Network PANDORA at the Institute for Ophthalmic Research, University of Tübingen, Germany. The project focuses on discovering pathomechanisms and novel drug optimization for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), with specific attention to the role of Factor H-related proteins (FHRs) in extracellular matrix stability, endothelial cell homeostasis, and the outer blood/retinal barrier.
The doctoral researcher will investigate how FHR protein accumulation affects choroidal endothelial cells and retinal pigment epithelial cells, including consequences for gene transcription, protein expression, cell morphology, extracellular matrix composition, diffusion, and angiogenesis. The project combines recombinant protein production, optimized in-house barrier models, and functional cellular assays to better understand early AMD pathology and support the testing of future therapeutic strategies.
Research methods include human primary and stem cell-derived retinal models, cell and tissue culture, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, western blotting, in vitro assays, and metabolism measurements. The student will work in a collaborative environment connected to a European network of experts in gene therapy, pharmacology, bioinformatics, disease modeling, and imaging, with opportunities for secondments and lab exchanges.
Eligibility is aimed at early-stage researchers with a Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences, biology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, medical sciences, or a related field. Candidates should have strong background in cell biology and/or biochemistry, excellent English skills, and a strong motivation to study retinal degeneration and translational biomedical research. Hands-on experience in cell culture and molecular biology is highly valued; complement system experience is an advantage.
Funding is provided through Horizon Europe MSCA for 36 months, with a gross salary of about €3,924 before deductions. The position is full-time and based at the University of Tübingen’s Institute for Ophthalmic Research, a leading vision research environment with modern facilities and strong links to biomedical and neuroscience research. Applicants must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences, biology, neurobiology, bioinformatics, medical sciences, or a closely related field. Strong background in cell biology and/or biochemistry is preferred, with hands-on experience in cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry techniques. Excellent oral and written English skills, good presentation skills, high motivation, ability to work independently and in a team, knowledge of cellular and molecular biology, eye biology and/or neuroscience, and strong interest in translational biomedical research are required. Background in complement system biology is a plus. For eligibility under MSCA rules, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment and must not already hold a doctoral degree.
