About this position

The Department of Accounting, Finance & Insurance at KU Leuven invites applications for a PhD position in Finance, focusing on empirical banking. The project will address emerging challenges for the banking sector, including competition from non-bank financial intermediaries and structural transformations required by the green transition. The successful candidate will join the Research Group Finance, which has a strong international reputation and is part of a wide network of universities, companies, and institutions.

The doctoral program is individualized, allowing the student to devote four years to full-time research. The program leads to a doctoral degree in Business Economics and prepares graduates for academic careers at top universities or research positions in policy institutions. The position is funded as a full-time PhD scholarship recipient, with an initial contract of 12 months, extendable up to 4 years upon positive evaluation.

Applicants must have completed a master's degree in (applied) economics, econometrics, finance, or business engineering by September 2026. Excellent academic qualifications at both bachelor and master level are required. Candidates should demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English, sufficient for effective communication with colleagues. GRE or GMAT test scores and/or evidence of English proficiency such as TOEFL or IELTS are recommended.

The application should include a curriculum vitae, research statement, transcript of all university grades, and proof of English proficiency. The contract can start as of October 1, 2026. The department offers a dynamic and stimulating environment, with opportunities to further develop skills through PhD courses, seminars, and international conferences.

KU Leuven is committed to equal opportunity and diversity, fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment.
